Most of you probably have a 1.0 version of Descent, somewhere. If you use 1.0 files, D1X won't start. And you'll find an error in the gamelog.txt file like "Error: Not enough strings in text file - expecting 621 (or at least 514), found 555". You'll need to update the game to version 1.4a. If you choose to update the game with the official patch, do so in DOSBox. That probably won't work, if you don't have a legitimate copy of Descent. You'll probably get an error when the patch tries to update descentr.exe. That's too bad, because the pig and hog files also need to be patched. In that case use the patch found on the Download misc page of the DXX-Rebirth website (called descent-game-content-10to14a-patch.zip). This patch only updates the pig and hog files. Read the included readme.txt file for instructions.

We study accelerated descent dynamics for constrained convex optimization. This dynamics can be described naturally as a coupling of a dual variable accumulating gradients at a given rate $\eta(t)$, and a primal variable obtained as the weighted average of the mirrored dual trajectory, with weights $w(t)$. Using a Lyapunov argument, we give sufficient conditions on $\eta$ and $w$ to achieve a desired convergence rate. As an example, we show that the replicator dynamics (an example of mirror descent on the simplex) can be accelerated using a simple averaging scheme. We then propose an adaptive averaging heuristic which adaptively computes the weights to speed up the decrease of the Lyapunov function. We provide guarantees on adaptive averaging in continuous-time, prove that it preserves the quadratic convergence rate of accelerated first-order methods in discrete-time, and give numerical experiments to compare it with existing heuristics, such as adaptive restarting. The experiments indicate that adaptive averaging performs at least as well as adaptive restarting, with significant improvements in some cases.
In this paper we study a family of gradient descent algorithms to approximate the regression function from reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs), the family being characterized by a polynomial decreasing rate of step sizes (or learning rate). By solving a bias-variance trade-off we obtain an early stopping rule and someprobabilistic upper bounds for the convergence of the algorithms. We also discuss the implication of these results in the context of classification where some fast convergence rates can be achieved for plug-in classifiers. Some connections are addressed with Boosting, Landweber iterations, and the online learning algorithms as stochastic approximations of the gradient descent method.
